Google has officially confirmed that one of Android 16’s most anticipated features — Live Updates — will not remain exclusive to Pixel devices. The company revealed that Samsung, OnePlus, vivo, and Xiaomi will also support the feature as part of their upcoming Android 16-based updates.
Live Updates, first introduced in the Android 16 beta, provides real-time, actionable notifications for apps such as ride-hailing, navigation, and food delivery. Rather than opening an app, users can view dynamic progress updates — such as the location of a food delivery or the estimated arrival of a ride — directly on their lock screen or home screen widgets.
At Google I/O 2025, the company showcased the feature’s interactive capabilities, which go beyond simply displaying information. Unlike Apple’s version on iPhones, Android’s implementation allows users to call a driver, send messages, or even tip directly from the Live Update interface.
Each smartphone brand will integrate the feature in its own unique way:
- Samsung will include Live Updates within its Now Bar, part of the One UI 8 update based on Android 16. Leaked builds have already offered a preview of the implementation, and Google has provided an official depiction of how it will look on Galaxy devices.
- OnePlus plans to deliver the feature through its Live Alerts system, introduced with Oxygen OS 15. The implementation has drawn comparisons to Apple’s Dynamic Island, offering fluid, glanceable information.
- vivo and Xiaomi will also embed Live Updates into their custom Android skins, though specific UI designs have yet to be disclosed.
As of now, Live Updates are limited to select app categories — including rideshare, delivery, and navigation — but Google hints at expanding support to additional services in future updates.
This cross-brand rollout marks a significant step in ensuring that Android’s standout features are more universally available, not just confined to Google’s own Pixel ecosystem. With Android 16 expected to debut widely later this year, more details on app compatibility and OEM-specific enhancements are likely to emerge in the coming months.
