Apple Intelligence Now Demands Nearly Twice the iPhone Storage Compared to Before

Apple Intelligence has rolled out across compatible iPhones, iPads, and Macs in a phased approach, introducing a host of new features through updates in iOS 18.1 and iOS 18.2. These updates brought exciting capabilities, but they also revealed a significant demand for storage space on Apple devices.

When the first set of Apple Intelligence features launched with iOS 18.1, Apple outlined several requirements for users. Among them was a need for 4GB of free storage space to accommodate on-device AI processing. This requirement was expected, given Apple’s emphasis on privacy, as most AI features operate locally on the device rather than relying on cloud-based processing. Apple now requires 7GB of free space per device for Apple Intelligence to function.

Recent features such as Genmoji, ChatGPT integration with Siri, Image Playground, Visual Intelligence, and Compose with ChatGPT highlight the technology’s potential. Looking ahead, Apple is preparing for further upgrades to Siri, expected to arrive with iOS 18.4, which could push the storage requirement well beyond the current 7GB.
