Chennai Weather Update: Light to Moderate Rainfall Predicted, Yellow Alert Issued in Tamil Nadu

Chennai woke up to cloudy skies on Thursday, with sunrise recorded at 5:42 AM and sunset expected at 6:29 PM. The city’s weather is set to remain humid, with minimum and maximum temperatures hovering around 28°C and 35°C respectively. Winds are expected to blow from the southwest at a steady speed of 18 km/h, and humidity levels are likely to remain around 72 percent.

The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast light to moderate rainfall across isolated regions of Tamil Nadu, including Puducherry and Karaikal. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also expected in several areas. The sudden rain on Monday offered relief from the ongoing heatwave, and weather officials have confirmed that the state capital will continue to receive rainfall until May 25. A drop of 2–3°C in day temperatures is also anticipated.

According to meteorologists, the current weather pattern is influenced by a cyclonic circulation located over the southeast Bay of Bengal and the adjoining South Andaman Sea. This system is causing widespread moisture movement and atmospheric instability over Tamil Nadu and nearby coastal areas.

In response to the changing weather conditions, IMD has issued a yellow alert for multiple districts including Tiruvallur, Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Coimbatore, and Thirunelveli. Residents in these areas have been advised to stay alert for localized rainfall and wind-related disturbances.

The onset of the Southwest monsoon in Chennai is expected between June 1 and June 5 this year. With pre-monsoon showers already underway, the city may receive its first official monsoon rain within the next two weeks.

Meanwhile, IMD has also issued a marine advisory due to the likelihood of squally winds blowing at speeds up to 55 km/h over the southern Tamil Nadu coast, Gulf of Mannar, and parts of the Comorin region. Fishermen have been strongly advised not to venture into the sea until conditions stabilize.
