Delhi schools will reopen today after the winter break caused by thick fog and cold weather. Classes will start at 9 am in person. To ensure safety due to dense fog, schools are instructed not to operate beyond 5 pm, according to the Department of Education.
To be cautious about the foggy weather, schools, including those with double shifts, won’t start before 9 am and must finish classes by 5 pm until further notice, as stated in the order. All staff, both teaching and non-teaching, need to follow their regular duty schedule. This directive also applies to Nursery, KG, and Primary students.
Earlier on January 7, the Delhi Education Minister, Atishi, extended the winter break until January 12 due to the ongoing cold wave in the city. In a post at that time, she mentioned, “Schools will remain closed for the next 5 days for students from nursery to class 5.”
As the temperature dropped even more, making the morning fog worse, there were talks about possibly extending the winter break. On Sunday, Delhi experienced its coldest morning of the season, with the temperature going down to 3.5 degrees Celsius. This was colder than Saturday’s 3.6 degrees and Friday’s 3.9 degrees.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that Sunday’s minimum temperature was four degrees lower than the average for the season. The IMD also predicted that very thick fog and cold wave conditions would persist in the national capital for more than two days, with dense fog expected until January 20.
The IMD forecast stated, “Dense to very dense fog conditions likely to continue to prevail over north India during the next 4-5 days.” The Palam Observatory near the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi reported dense fog with zero visibility at 5 am, marking the longest duration of dense fog this season.
A rule from the Education Department issued on Sunday says that classes cannot begin before 9 am and must finish by 5 pm. All teachers and other staff need to follow their regular work schedule, according to the order.
The order stated, “It is directed that all students of government, government-aided and recognized private schools shall join back classes in physical mode at their respective schools with effect from 15/01/2024 (Monday). This includes nursery, KG, and primary classes as well.”
