In a stunning turn of events, unaccounted cash amounting to ₹353 crore was discovered on the premises of Congress Rajya Sabha MP Dheeraj Sahu. The controversy surrounding this discovery has escalated into a major political storm due to the direct involvement of the Congress MP. The income tax department initiated raids on the premises of Boudh Distilleries Private Limited, spanning across Odisha, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. The raid, conducted on a Wednesday, revealed stacks of notes which are stored in almirah racks, etc.,
The counting operation has given so many challenges to the staff members. As this alone is not the duty of SBI branch staff but they have to do the regular operations as well. The counting extended up to two days. Also, this is the largest cash haul in a single operation in the country. 176 bags filled with cash were delivered to the SBI branch, necessitating the involvement of three banks and 40 currency-counting machines.
The counting operation comprised nine teams, each consisting of about 80 individuals from the tax department and various banks. Working tirelessly in shifts, these teams operated 24X7 to ensure the completion of the counting process. Recognizing the magnitude of the discovery, an additional team of 200 officials, including security personnel, drivers, and support staff, joined the efforts.
