Eight former officers of the Indian Navy have been given the death penalty in Qatar, accused of spying for Israel. The foreign ministry, while calling the judgment “shocking,” stated that they couldn’t discuss the case much due to its confidential nature but assured that they would challenge the decision.
These men, some of whom were highly respected officers in charge of important Indian warships, were employed by a private company called Dahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services. This company offered training and services to Qatar’s military.
Their requests for bail were repeatedly denied, and they were kept in detention by Qatari authorities. Today, Qatar’s Court of First Instance issued the judgment.
The individuals sentenced are Capt Navtej Singh Gill, Capt Birendra Kumar Verma, Capt Saurabh Vasisht, Cdr Amit Nagpal, Cdr Purnendu Tiwari, Cdr Sugunakar Pakala, Cdr Sanjeev Gupta, and Sailor Ragesh.
The foreign ministry stated, “We are deeply shocked by the verdict of the death penalty and are awaiting the detailed judgment. We are in touch with the family members and the legal team, and we are exploring all legal options.”
“We attach high importance to this case and have been following it closely. We will continue to provide all consular and legal assistance. We will also raise the verdict with Qatari authorities,” the ministry’s statement added.
