Last week, the European Commission officially announced the implementation of the Common Charger Directive, marking a significant milestone in reducing electronic waste and simplifying charging solutions. Initially approved in October 2022, the directive mandates that all new devices sold in the EU—including smartphones, tablets, cameras, and peripherals like keyboards and mice—must now support USB-C charging. Laptops, however, have been granted an extended timeline and will need to comply starting in late April 2026.
This decision ushers in the end of the chaotic era of countless incompatible chargers and ports across Europe. With the transition period for manufacturers now complete, USB-C is the standard for almost all portable electronic devices, making it easier for consumers to charge their gadgets without the need for multiple chargers. While laptops still have some leeway until April 28, 2026, they too will eventually need to adopt USB-C as the norm.
The list of devices now required to support USB-C includes mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, headsets, game consoles, portable speakers, e-readers, keyboards, mice, portable navigation systems, and earbuds. However, some devices, like electric toothbrushes, hair clippers, and similar items, are not yet covered under the directive. There is optimism, though, as the European Commission may revise and expand the list of targeted devices in the future.
The motivation behind this directive is clear: reducing e-waste. The European Commission estimates that discarded and unused chargers generate approximately 11,000 tonnes of e-waste annually. To further address this issue, future plans include extending the directive to reduce the inclusion of unnecessary cables bundled with devices. Additionally, as wireless charging technology matures and becomes more widely adopted, efforts will focus on creating standardized protocols for wireless chargers.
This unified approach to charging standards is expected to make life simpler for consumers while contributing to a more sustainable future. USB-C’s versatility and widespread adoption mark a major step toward reducing environmental impact and streamlining technology usage across Europe.
