In a strategic move reinforcing India’s role in the global electronics supply chain, Taiwanese manufacturing giant Foxconn is developing a 300-acre industrial campus in India to support large-scale production of Apple’s iPhones. Nicknamed the “Dorminator” for its sprawling residential complexes, the facility will house tens of thousands of workers, underscoring the country’s growing importance as a manufacturing hub for Apple.
Located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, the site is being constructed with comprehensive infrastructure, including dormitories, food halls, training centers, and logistics zones. The aim is to streamline operations while accommodating an expanding workforce in a self-contained ecosystem modeled after Foxconn’s campuses in China.
According to sources familiar with the project, the facility is part of Foxconn’s broader $1.6 billion investment plan to scale up operations in India. The site is expected to support production not just for current iPhone models but also future-generation devices, helping Apple diversify its manufacturing beyond China amid ongoing geopolitical and supply chain tensions.
Foxconn’s latest move comes as Apple continues to deepen its manufacturing footprint in India. The company has already started assembling several iPhone models in the country, including the iPhone 15, and has actively worked with suppliers to build local capacity for components, packaging, and logistics.
Industry analysts view this development as a significant milestone in India’s ambition to become a global electronics manufacturing powerhouse. The government’s Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme, designed to attract high-tech investment, has been a major driver behind Apple and Foxconn’s aggressive expansion.
The “Dorminator” campus is expected to house over 60,000 employees upon full completion. With a focus on worker welfare, the facility will include recreational amenities and is expected to meet high environmental and labor standards.
Foxconn’s move also highlights the evolving nature of global supply chains, where companies are not just seeking cost efficiencies but also resilience and regional balance. As Apple looks to mitigate risks from overdependence on China, its India strategy is being positioned as a long-term solution.
The first phase of the facility is scheduled to be operational by early 2026, with recruitment and training drives already underway. Local governments are working closely with Foxconn to ensure seamless integration with state infrastructure, including transport, power, and water supply.
With this mega-campus, Foxconn is not just building a factory — it’s building a workforce. The “Dorminator” may well become a defining symbol of India’s rise as a new center for global tech manufacturing.
