During Maha Shivratri, some devotees choose to observe a ‘nirjala’ fast, which means fasting without water. However, many others prefer to eat vegetarian-friendly foods instead. These foods are specially prepared for fasting and are considered appropriate for the occasion.

For those observing the fast, there are guidelines to follow during puja (worship). These guidelines help ensure that the puja is conducted correctly and respectfully. It is essential to keep these guidelines in mind to honor the significance of Maha Shivratri properly.

Fasting is known to cleanse both body and mind, making one more alert and ready for worshiping with full devotion. While some devotees choose to fast completely without any food or water, many others prefer to eat vegetarian-friendly foods. These include options like sago, millet, pumpkin, potato, makhana (fox nuts), Arbi (taro root), banana, and yogurt, among others.

It is important to avoid certain foods during Maha Shivratri fasting. Foods like wheat, rice, salt, certain vegetables, and pulses should be avoided. Additionally, non-vegetarian foods, onion, and garlic must be strictly avoided, even by those who are not fasting, as these are considered inappropriate for the occasion.

By sticking to vegetarian-friendly foods and avoiding prohibited items, devotees can observe Maha Shivratri fasting under tradition and show reverence to Lord Shiva.

Dos for Fasting on Maha Shivratri

  • The night of Shivratri holds great significance, and before the Shiv Puja, devotees should bathe again.
  • It’s important to stay hydrated and try to consume all the necessary food groups for a balanced diet to maintain energy levels throughout the fast.
  • On the fasting day itself, devotees should wake up early, take a bath, and wear clean clothes. They should then make a firm commitment (sankalp) to observe the day-long fast with utmost dedication and devotion, following all the fasting rules.
  • On the day before Maha Shivratri, known as Trayodashi, devotees should have only one meal to prepare themselves physically and mentally for worshiping Shiva.
  • Shivratri puja can be performed once or four times during the night.
  • During the fast, devotees should stick to Satvic and fasting-friendly foods like fruits, milk, milk products, and root vegetables, while avoiding grains and legumes.
  • Before worshiping Shiva, devotees should bathe the Shivalinga with water, milk, saffron, honey, and Ganga water. They should also light a lamp and incense.
  • After completing the Shiv Puja, devotees should continue fasting and break it only the next day after taking a bath, preferably before the Chaturdashi tithi ends.

Don’ts for Fasting on Maha Shivratri

  • It’s not recommended to consume anything that has been offered to Lord Shiva, as it is believed to bring bad luck. Avoid offering coconut water to the Shivling, although coconuts can still be offered to Lord Shiva.
  • Avoid using kumkum tilak during the puja; instead, use sandalwood paste.
  • Do not offer flowers like kevada and champa, as they are considered cursed by Lord Shiva.
  • Snack on dry fruits, nuts, and seeds to maintain high energy levels throughout the day.
  • While fasting, limit your intake of tea and coffee to avoid dehydration.
  • If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugar levels closely during fasting.
  • Opt for foods that aid digestion and keep you feeling full for longer, rather than deep-fried items.
  • Incorporate probiotics such as curd into your diet to maintain a healthy gut.
