Manohar Joshi Death: Former Maharashtra Chief Minister Manohar Joshi passed away today, Friday, February 23, at the age of 86. He was previously the Lok Sabha Speaker. Joshi had been admitted to PD Hinduja Hospital after having a heart attack on February 21. According to family sources as reported by PTI, he passed away at the hospital. Last year in May, he was also admitted to the same hospital after suffering a brain hemorrhage.
Family sources informed ANI that the funeral will take place later today at Dadar Shivaji Park Crematorium. Joshi will be given full state honors during the funeral proceedings.
Admitted in ICU
According to his son Unmesh, Manohar Joshi had been admitted to the ICU and was being closely monitored. He experienced cardiac issues on Wednesday and had been dealing with health problems related to his age for some time. The family plans to hold the last rites at the Shivaji Park crematorium, following which his mortal remains will be taken to their residence in Matunga.
The hospital had previously released a statement regarding Joshi’s condition, confirming that he was admitted to P.D. Hinduja Hospital on February 21, 2024. He had suffered a cardiac event and was in critical condition. Currently, Joshi is in the ICU, receiving intensive medical care and treatment.
Manohar Joshi’s Political Journey
Manohar Joshi had a notable political career, serving as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999 and later as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2002 to 2004. Additionally, he held the position of a Member of the Rajya Sabha from 2006 to 2012 and served as the Minister of Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises from 1999 to 2002.
Following Joshi’s passing, various political leaders expressed their condolences and paid tribute to him. Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis highlighted Joshi’s significant contributions to society, politics, and education. Fadnavis emphasized Joshi’s extensive political journey, from being a corporator and mayor of Mumbai to rising through the ranks to become the chief minister and a member of Parliament. He described Joshi as a disciplined individual, both in his personal and public life.

Ajit Pawar offered heartfelt tributes to Joshi, recognizing his enduring legacy.
Former Union minister and NCP founder Sharad Pawar also mourned Joshi’s demise, describing him as a straightforward leader known for his determination to accomplish tasks. He expressed sadness over Joshi’s death and praised his outspokenness and strong work ethic. Sharad Pawar emphasized Joshi’s close association with Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray and highlighted his efforts to promote the state’s development during his tenure as Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Additionally, he acknowledged Joshi’s role in installing an equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji in the Parliament premises during his time as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha. Sharad Pawar extended his condolences to the Joshi family, recognizing their loss.
