Movie Review
Sriram Raghavan’s new movie, “Merry Christmas,” begins with an interesting scene. Two sets of mixer grinders are shown in two frames, grinding different things like tablets and a mix of red chilies and lentils. It’s Christmas Eve in Mumbai, and the city is brightly lit, filled with the festive spirit.
Albert, an architect from Dubai (played by Vijay Sethupathi), is returning home after seven years. The city is celebrating Christmas, and Albert receives a bottle of homemade wine from a neighbor. Albert meets Maria (played by Katrina Kaif), and although they don’t have a romantic encounter, they start wandering the city together, enjoying the festivities.
As they chat, Maria takes Albert to her flat, where she runs a bakery named Jupiter Bakery. Their conversations reveal minimal details about each other. After putting Maria’s daughter, Annie, to bed, they decide to go out again. When they return, they find Maria’s husband, Jerome, shot dead on a sofa.
Albert tries to call the police but hesitates, realizing it would be hard to explain the situation. The once happy festival now takes a dark turn.
