What is the Raman Effect?
CV Raman made his discovery of the Raman Effect while working in a laboratory at the Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in Kolkata. This effect is a phenomenon studied in spectroscopy, which is all about how light and other radiation are absorbed and emitted by matter, and how these processes depend on the wavelength of the radiation.
The Raman Effect involves a change in the wavelength of light when it interacts with molecules. Imagine a light beam passing through a clear, dust-free sample of a chemical compound. While most of the light continues in the same direction, a small portion of it scatters in different directions.
Interestingly, the wavelengths of most of the scattered light remain the same as the incident light. However, a small fraction of the scattered light has wavelengths that are different from the original light beam. This unique phenomenon is known as the Raman Effect.
