Neeraj Chopra Capable of 94m Throw in Future, Says Former Coach

India’s Olympic gold medallist Neeraj Chopra may have already rewritten national history with his javelin exploits, but according to his former coach, the best may still be ahead of him. In a recent interview, the coach expressed strong belief that Chopra has the potential to achieve throws beyond 92 metres — possibly even reaching the 93m or 94m mark in the coming years.

The comment comes as Chopra continues to push his own limits on the global stage. Known for his consistent performance and technical excellence, the 26-year-old athlete has steadily improved his distances while maintaining top form in major championships.

“Neeraj is mentally very strong and highly focused. His technique has matured, and if conditions are favourable, we could see him go beyond 92 or 93 metres — maybe even touch 94,” said the coach. “It’s a matter of timing, peak fitness, and the right competition environment.”

Chopra’s current personal best stands at 89.94 metres, achieved at the Diamond League meet in Stockholm in 2022. While he has consistently remained among the top contenders worldwide, breaching the 90-metre barrier remains a goal he is yet to accomplish in competition.

Globally, only a few javelin throwers have crossed the 92m mark in the modern era, with Jan Železný’s world record of 98.48m still standing tall. For Chopra, moving into the 92–94m range would place him in elite company and significantly raise his legacy in the sport.

As India builds up to upcoming global events including the 2025 World Championships and the 2026 Asian Games, expectations continue to mount. However, Chopra has shown no signs of pressure, often crediting his success to a strong training ethic, mental discipline, and a desire to constantly evolve.

Whether or not he breaks the 94m barrier, Chopra remains India’s brightest athletics star — and possibly one of the greatest javelin talents of this generation.
