Rome, NY – On December 24, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) will once again embark on its annual mission to track Santa Claus as he travels around the globe delivering gifts. This beloved tradition has been part of NORAD’s operations since 1955 and brings joy to millions of children and families every Christmas Eve.
NORAD personnel from the Eastern Air Defense Sector (EADS), based in Rome, New York, will play a critical role in this effort. “EADS is always happy to support NORAD’s Santa tracking operation,” said EADS Commander Col. Joseph F. Roos. “Our highly trained Airmen defend the homeland day and night, and they are prepared and ready to track Santa this December 24.”
The EADS unit, responsible for air defense east of the Mississippi, includes members of the New York Air National Guard’s 224th Air Defense Group, the Canadian Armed Forces, U.S. Army and Navy liaison officers, and federal civilians. The team is equipped with sophisticated systems designed to detect and deter aerial threats—technology that will help pinpoint Santa’s sleigh as he embarks on his journey.
A Tradition Rooted in History
NORAD’s Santa tracking tradition began in 1955, when a child mistakenly called the Continental Air Defense Command’s operations center, seeking Santa Claus. The call reached Colonel Harry Shoup, who instructed his staff to check the radar for signs of Santa’s sleigh. That simple act of kindness became a cherished tradition, continuing after NORAD was established in 1958.
Now, NORAD uses a combination of space-based sensors, radar, and advanced command systems to monitor Santa’s progress. Fighter aircraft, air-to-air refueling tankers, and ground-based systems also stand by to ensure Santa’s journey proceeds smoothly.

How Families Can Track Santa
Starting at 4 a.m. MST on December 24, the NORAD Tracks Santa Operations Center will go live. Families can call 1-877-HI-NORAD (1-877-446-6723) to speak directly with a staff member for real-time updates on Santa’s location. Operators will be available until midnight to answer questions and share Santa’s progress.
Santa enthusiasts can also follow his journey online through the NORAD Tracks Santa website and social media platforms. The initiative, supported by American and Canadian NORAD personnel, continues to captivate audiences worldwide, bringing holiday magic to families and fans of all ages.
