In the small and poor fishing village of Ibrahim Hyderi in Karachi, Haji Baloch and his fishing crew found a big fortune in the deep blue waters of the Arabian Sea. What they caught that day was the rare golden fish, also called “Sowa” in the local language.
From being poor to becoming rich Haji Baloch, who lives in Ibrahim Hyderi, had a big change in his life overnight. The fish he and his team caught were sold at the busy Karachi harbor for a huge amount – 70 million rupees. Mubarak Khan, who speaks for the Pakistan Fishermen Folk Forum, said that the auction was a massive success.
All the Sowa fish we caught were quickly sold at the auction on Friday morning, Khan shared.

Why do people want the Sowa fish so much? Besides its shiny scales and heavy weight of 20 to 40 kgs, this amazing sea creature is famous for its healing powers. People believe that substances from its belly can heal, and even a thread-like part is used in surgeries.
