Pradosh Vrat Story
The story of Pradosh Vrat revolves around Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. Long ago, there was a fierce battle between the Gods (Devtas) and the Demons (Asuras). The Gods were losing, and many had already perished. In desperation, they sought help from Brahma, Vishnu, and Mahesh (Shiva).
The divine beings advised the Gods to churn the ocean to obtain the holy nectar called amrut, which would grant them immortality. However, the Gods couldn’t do it alone, so they sought assistance from the Demons, promising them a share of the nectar in return.
As they began churning the ocean, a deadly poison called Halahala emerged first. It threatened to destroy everything, including the Gods and Demons. In a brave act, Lord Shiva drank the poison to save the world. Goddess Parvati intervened by holding his throat to prevent the poison from harming him, thus earning him the name “Neelkanth” (blue-throated).
Grateful for Lord Shiva’s sacrifice, the Gods and Demons praised him. In response, Lord Shiva danced joyously, displaying his divine power. This event led to the observance of Pradosh Vrat, dedicated to worshiping and appeasing Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati.
Pradosh Vrat Rituals
On this special day, devotees start their morning by waking up early and taking a bath. Then, they place idols of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in their prayer room. They light a lamp and offer garlands to the idols as a sign of respect and devotion.
