Reliance Jio Launches JioSpaceFiber: India’s First Satellite-Based Internet Service for Remote Areas

Reliance Jio has unveiled a game-changing satellite-based internet service in India, known as JioSpaceFiber. This service is set to provide high-speed broadband to previously underserved areas. The announcement was made at the India Mobile Congress (IMC), marking a significant development in the country’s digital landscape.

With over 450 million customers already enjoying fast broadband and wireless internet, Reliance Jio aims to make digital services accessible to every Indian household. JioSpaceFiber joins their broadband offerings, including JioFiber and JioAirFiber, ensuring that people and businesses across India can access reliable, low-latency, high-speed internet, even in remote locations. The satellite network will also boost mobile backhaul capacity, enhancing the availability of Jio’s True5G network.

Satellite Broadband Service

An outstanding feature of this initiative is the partnership between Jio and SES, a prominent satellite operator. SES gives Jio access to advanced medium earth orbit (MEO) satellite tech. Through SES’s O3b and new O3b mPOWER satellites, Jio becomes the exclusive provider of this innovative technology, offering scalable and affordable broadband solutions throughout India. This service stands out for its exceptional reliability and flexibility.

Akash Ambani, Chairman of Reliance Jio Infocomm Limited, envisions JioSpaceFiber as a means to bring broadband to millions of homes and businesses for the first time. This offering is a significant step toward ensuring that everyone, regardless of their location, can participate fully in the digital society, with gigabit-speed access to vital online services like government, education, health, and entertainment.

John-Paul Hemingway, Chief Strategy Officer at SES, praised the collaboration with Jio and emphasized the service’s role in supporting India’s Digital India initiative. He highlighted the goal of delivering multiple gigabits per second of internet throughput to any location in India. The deployment of fiber-like services from space is already transforming parts of India and holds the promise of digital transformation, even in the most rural areas.”
