The men, including highly respected officers who used to lead important Indian warships, were employed by a private company called Dahra Global Technologies and Consultancy Services. This company offered training and other services to Qatar’s armed forces.
According to sources, some of these men were involved in a very secretive project. They were working on small submarines with advanced Italian technology that had special stealth features.
There are reports suggesting that these eight former Navy members have been charged with spying.
The Ministry of External Affairs had previously expressed its surprise at the decision and promised to discuss the matter with Qatari officials.
“We are deeply shocked by the verdict of the death penalty and are awaiting the detailed judgment. We are in touch with the family members and the legal team, and we are exploring all legal options,” the ministry stated.
The people who received the sentence are Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, and Sailor Ragesh.
Meetu Bhargava, who is the sister of one of the former officers held in detention, asked for the government’s help to bring her brother back in June this year.
A few days ago, she posted a message on X, in which she asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for help.
The Indian Government need to act immediately, swiftly & walk the talk if they really care about their defence personnel as today is 69th day of the illegal solitary confinement of our senior citizen Navy Veterans (officers) in Doha (Qatar) #Help #IndianNavy #Veterans #SOS https://t.co/22aqUsYEPz
