According to sources, some of these men were involved in a very secretive project. They were working on small submarines with advanced Italian technology that had special stealth features.

There are reports suggesting that these eight former Navy members have been charged with spying.

The Ministry of External Affairs had previously expressed its surprise at the decision and promised to discuss the matter with Qatari officials.

“We are deeply shocked by the verdict of the death penalty and are awaiting the detailed judgment. We are in touch with the family members and the legal team, and we are exploring all legal options,” the ministry stated.

The people who received the sentence are Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Captain Saurabh Vasisht, Commander Amit Nagpal, Commander Purnendu Tiwari, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, and Sailor Ragesh.

Meetu Bhargava, who is the sister of one of the former officers held in detention, asked for the government’s help to bring her brother back in June this year.

A few days ago, she posted a message on X, in which she asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for help.

“These Ex-Navy officers are the pride of the nation & again I request our Hon’ble Prime Minister with folded hands that it is high time that they all are brought back to India immediately without any further delay,” mentioning Prime Minister Modi and Union Ministers Amit Shah and Rajnath Singh in her post.
