SAP Launches AI Tools To Support Developers

SAP, the renowned German enterprise software firm, has made a significant leap forward in artificial intelligence (AI). In a groundbreaking move, SAP has introduced a series of generative AI tools and extensions designed to enhance its enterprise resource planning (ERP) software suite, SAP Business Technology Platform. This development brings a wave of innovation to the technology landscape. However, what sets this announcement apart is that SAP has yet to unveil its pricing strategy for these transformative generative AI capabilities.

SAP India Continues its Meteoric Rise

Kulmeet Bawa, the President and Managing Director of the SAP Indian subcontinent revealed in an interview that the September quarter marked the 12th consecutive quarter during which India has emerged as SAP’s fastest-growing market globally. This impressive growth speaks volumes about the thriving technology landscape in India.

SAP’s Generative AI Tools

SAP’s new generative AI tools, previously under internal testing, are strategically aimed at two primary objectives. The first is to boost developer productivity by harnessing the power of generative AI. The second is to provide companies with a multi-large language model (LLM) interface, allowing them to select the AI model that aligns with their specific needs. This repository of AI models includes esteemed offerings such as OpenAI’s GPT-4, Meta’s Llama-2, and others.

Pricing

One of the key challenges SAP faces is determining the pricing strategy for its generative AI tools. The complexity arises from the substantial computing power required to run these tools. The industry experts foresee various solutions emerging to make generative AI applications more affordable over time. For instance, Qualcomm’s approach involves integrating small, offline AI models into smartphones, democratizing the technology for developers. IT service providers also discuss the possibility of breaking down LLMs into smaller, more accessible sizes to expand the adoption of AI.

Strong Financial Performance in India

While SAP does not disclose region-wise revenue and financials, the company’s financial filing for the September quarter in Germany, dated 18 October, highlighted “outstanding revenue growth” in India. This is a testament to the fact that India’s enterprise tech spending remains on an upward trajectory.

Data Regulations

Bawa also assured that SAP complies with all data regulations in India. He emphasized their commitment to staying within the bounds of the law and working with governments to ensure data governance is in line with local regulations. Notably, SAP has localized data operations for its cloud, ERP, BTP, and other tools, and plans to extend this practice to Ariba and additional tools by mid-2024. This aligns with best practices, especially with the advent of generative AI technologies.

The remarkable growth in India’s tech sector further shows the country’s position as a dynamic hub for innovation and technology adoption. As SAP continues to shape the future of enterprise software, the world eagerly awaits the transformative possibilities of generative AI.
