In addition to this feat, Shami entered the top 10 list of the highest wicket-takers in ODI World Cup history, currently headed by Glenn McGrath with 71 wickets. During the match against Sri Lanka at the Wankhede stadium on November 2, Shami secured his third five-wicket haul in World Cup history, bringing him level with Starc in terms of the most five-wicket hauls in ODI World Cups.
Shami’s remarkable performance in the ongoing Cricket World Cup 2023 is notable, considering he didn’t play in India’s first four matches due to the team’s tactical choices. However, he has picked up fourteen wickets in just three games since his inclusion.
He earned two five-wicket hauls in this World Cup, the first against New Zealand in Dharamsala and the second against England in Lucknow. The third five-wicket haul occurred in Mumbai against Sri Lanka. With 14 wickets in only three matches, Shami appears set to be the leading wicket-taker in the tournament.
During the match against Sri Lanka, India set numerous records as they won by a staggering margin of 302 runs, with Sri Lanka bowled out for just 55 runs in 19.4 overs.
Mohammed Shami‘s remarkable performance in the match resulted in several records, thanks to his excellent figures of 5 overs, 1 maiden, 18 runs, and 5 wickets.
