Sophie Hediger, a Swiss snowboarder who competed in the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics, tragically passed away on Monday following an avalanche at the Arosa mountain resort in Switzerland. She was 26 years old.

The devastating news was confirmed by Swiss-Ski, the country’s skiing federation, on Tuesday. Walter Reusser, CEO of Swiss-Ski, expressed deep sorrow in a statement, describing Hediger’s death as a heartbreaking loss.

“We are shocked, and our thoughts are with Sophie’s family, to whom we offer our deepest condolences,” Reusser said. “(She lost her life) tragically, brutally, and far too soon.” The federation declined to disclose additional details about the incident to respect Hediger’s family during this difficult time.

A Rising Star in Snowboarding

Hediger was an accomplished athlete who represented Switzerland in women’s snowboard cross at the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. She also competed in the mixed team snowboard cross event during the same Games, finishing 15th in her individual event.

Over the past two years, Hediger continued to build on her Olympic experience, emerging as one of Switzerland’s most promising snowboarders. She achieved her first two World Cup podium finishes during the 2023-24 season, including a career-best second-place result in St. Moritz in January.

Her success extended to the 2023 Winter Universiade in Lake Placid, New York, where she claimed a gold medal, further cementing her status as a rising star. Most recently, she competed in a World Cup race in Cervinia, Italy, on December 14, and was preparing to represent Switzerland at the 2024 World Championships in Engadin.
