The car that Vetri Duraisamy was riding in was traveling on the Nala National Highway when the driver suddenly had chest pain. This caused the car to lose control and flip over while driving on a narrow mountain road, leading it to fall into the river Sutlej. Sadly, the driver passed away immediately in the accident.

Vetri’s friend, Gopinath, was rescued but had serious injuries and was taken to the intensive care unit (ICU) of a private hospital. Despite finding the car and Gopinath, Vetri’s body was still missing. Rescue teams have been searching for him for the past nine days.

Vetri Duraisamy

The body of Vetri Duraisamy, the son of former Chennai Mayor Saidai Duraisamy, was found in the Sutlej river in Himachal Pradesh on Monday, February 12. The car he was traveling in fell into the river after the driver lost control near Kashang Nala NH 05 in Kinnaur district on February 4. Vetri was reported missing, while the driver, Tanjin, was declared dead, and another passenger named Gopinath was hospitalized.

Kinnaur Deputy Superintendent of Police Naveen Jhalta stated that Vetri’s body has been moved to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla for postmortem. Once the postmortem is completed, the body will be handed over to the family. Gopinath, who was admitted to the hospital, has been transferred to a hospital in Chennai and is recovering.

According to a statement from the Himachal Pradesh Police Department on February 6, human remains were discovered on a rock along the river bank. These remains were sent to the State Forensic Science Laboratory in Junga for DNA extraction and analysis.

The car lost control, leading to the driver losing control of the vehicle. The Station House Officer of Reckong Peo Police Station, along with the QT police team, rescued Gopinath from the riverside and admitted him to the Regional Hospital. He had sustained head injuries and fractures and was referred to Indira Gandhi Medical College and Hospital in Shimla. The rescue team also found the vehicle submerged in the Sutlej River, and the body of the driver, Tanjin, was recovered and taken to the hospital.

Vetri Duraisamy was suspected to have been swept downstream in the river. Search operations involving the Indo-Tibetan Border Police, the Indian Army, and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were conducted along the river banks. However, rescue efforts were hampered by adverse weather conditions and darkness, leading to multiple interruptions.

Sources indicate that Vetri was in Himachal Pradesh as part of a film production crew. He directed a Tamil film titled ‘Endraavathu Oru Naal‘ in 2021, which received recognition at various international film festivals.

A reward of Rs 1 Crore

Saithai Duraisamy announced a reward of Rs 1 crore for any information about his son. National rescue teams and scuba divers were deployed to search for Vetri for eight days. His body was finally discovered trapped under a rock, six kilometers away from the accident site, after his belongings and cell phone were found earlier.

A public tribute will be held at 5 o’clock this evening, followed by cremation at Kannammapet graveyard at 6 o’clock.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K.Stalin, OPS, Edappadi Palaniswami, and many others have expressed their condolences. The Himachal Pradesh police have announced that the scuba divers who found Vetri Duraisamy’s body will receive the Rs 1 crore reward as promised by Saithai Duraisamy.
