A fisherman at Sagar Nagar, Andhra Pradesh’s Visakhapatnam, caught a rare and venomous creature – the Hydrophis sea snake in his net. The snake known for its deadly bite, was caught in the fisherman’s net.
The Hydrophis sea snake, scientifically named Hydrophis Belcheri, resides in the deep area of the ocean. Also, it is considered the most venomous snake globally. Local fishermen describe it as “Katla Paamu,” which tells us the caution required when dealing with this reptile variety.
Dr. P Srinivasa Rao, who is the Assistant Director of the Fisheries Department said that if the Hydrophis sea snake bites you, it’s very dangerous. The poison in this snake is more deadly when compared to snakes on land. It is 100 times more venomous than other snakes found on the Earth. If someone gets bitten, they need to be rushed to the hospital immediately. If they don’t get help quickly, it could lead to death.
The unexpected guest hides himself in the fisherman’s net during an evening catch. The fisherman who knows well about the snake released it into depth of the sea to avoid danger. The Hydrophis sea snake lives by eating small fish and plants in the water. Sometimes, it accidentally gets caught in fishermen’s nets, which can be dangerous. The fishermen are careful and know about the risks of dealing with this poisonous sea snake. They use the term “Katla Paamu” to remind each other to be cautious when handling their catch from the water.
Finding the Hydrophis sea snake in Sagar Nagar is a clear reminder of how we need to be careful with our actions in the ocean. While we enjoy the amazing things underwater, it’s important to be cautious and aware. We have to make sure both people and nature stay safe in this delicate dance of living together.
