WhatsApp Might Soon Let You Send Messages To Other Apps Like Telegram And Signal

WhatsApp might soon let you send messages to other apps like Signal or Telegram. This new feature is in response to Europe’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) regulations. These regulations require big companies, or ‘gatekeepers’, to make it easier for users to communicate across different messaging apps. They have six months to do this. WhatsApp is working on this new feature as a way to comply with the DMA rules. It’s called chat interoperability.

WhatsApp is planning a new feature called Third Party Chats, as per a report from WABetainfo. This feature is currently available in the WhatsApp beta version 2.24.5.18. The leaked screenshot from WABetainfo suggests that the chat interoperability feature will be optional. This means users will have to manually activate it if they want to use it.

3 Precautions from WhatsApp

Before enabling the feature, WhatsApp will reportedly implement three precautions. The first precaution states: “You’re messaging someone outside of WhatsApp. Third-party apps may use different end-to-end encryption.” This indicates that users will be notified about potential differences in encryption when communicating with someone on another app.

The second precaution states that there might be more spam and scams in third-party chats. This means users should be cautious when chatting with people on other apps to avoid potential scams or unwanted messages.

The third precaution mentions that third-party apps have their own rules for handling data. This means that users should be aware that their information might be treated differently on other apps compared to WhatsApp.

Chat Interoperability

The new chat interoperability feature will let users send messages to people who are not using WhatsApp but are on other apps like Telegram or Signal. However, according to the WaBetaInfo report, these chats will appear in a separate inbox under the chats tab. This means users will see their regular WhatsApp chats separately from the ones with people on other messaging apps.

Dick Brouwer, who works as an engineering director at WhatsApp, recently told Wired magazine that WhatsApp will soon introduce a chat interoperability feature in response to the EU’s Digital Markets Act (DMA) regulations. However, the report mentioned that initially, interoperable chats will only support text messages, pictures, voice messages, and videos. It may take years for features like calls and group chats to become available in interoperable chats.

Explaining Meta’s approach to interoperable chats, Brouwer said, “We believe the best way to do this is by using WhatsApp’s current client-server setup… This means WhatsApp will document our client-server protocol, allowing third-party apps to connect directly to our system and exchange messages with WhatsApp users.” This approach aims to make it easier for users on different messaging platforms to communicate seamlessly.
