Lord Rama is considered the seventh incarnation of Lord Vishnu in the Hindu mythology. He was born to King Dasharatha and Queen Kaushalya in Ayodhya and was their eldest son. Lord Rama is seen as a symbol of truth, duty, righteousness, and compassion.

He embodied the traits of an ideal person and was known as Maryada Purushottama, which means the perfect man. The festival of Ram Navami celebrates Lord Rama’s life, his values, and his victory of good over evil.

People from different parts of the country come to Ayodhya to participate in the Ram Navami rituals and receive Lord Rama’s blessings.

Many people observe a day-long fast on this day. Devotees of Lord Rama read scriptures such as the Ramayana and Shrimad Bhagavatam. On this day, Lord Rama is worshipped along with Sita Mata, Lakshman, and Hanuman. Ram Navami usually falls in March or April according to the Gregorian calendar.

Ram Navami History

The story of Lord Rama’s birth is told in Valmiki’s Ramayana, one of the most important Hindu epics, dating back to the 8th or 7th century B.C. Ayodhya, under the rule of King Dashrath, was a prosperous kingdom, but the king had no children to continue his lineage. To fulfill his wish for children, King Dashrath performed a special ritual called a Yagya, where many sages and divine beings prayed to Lord Brahma on his behalf.

Meanwhile, Ravana, the ruler of Lanka, was causing trouble by misusing a boon given to him by Lord Brahma, which made him immune to death at the hands of gods, Gandharvas, yakshas, or demons. However, he could still be defeated by humans. Ravana’s strength included powerful weapons, a chariot, and the ability to shapeshift, making him nearly invincible. The gods approached Lord Vishnu, urging him to come to earth and defeat Ravana.

After the Yagya was completed, a divine figure appeared over the sacrificial fire and gave King Dashrath a divine ‘payasam’ (sweet dessert) to share among his wives Kausalya, Kaikeyi, and Sumitra. Kausalya gave birth to Lord Rama, Kaikeyi gave birth to Bharat, and Sumitra gave birth to Laxman and Shatrughna.
